At the time, works by the following authors were on one or other of the Indices Librorum Prohibitorum in Catholic Germany: Ovid, Erasmus, Spinoza, Swift, Montesquieu, Rousseau, Voltaire, Kant, Herder, Wieland, Schiller – and Goethe himself.
