This is probably going to mean some positive feedback cycles in the albido affect and possibly mess with some polar bears...but on the other hand any bets as to when its going to get opened up for ecotourism?

Also I wonder how this will affect the whole debate over ANWAR, with increased year round sea access?

An overview of obstacles to the navigation of the Northwest passage:

1. Frobisher: -Mistook captured Eskimo for Chinaman, mistook (landlocked) Frobisher Bay for passage.

Solution: Wikipedia makes the Eskimo-Chinaman confusion unlikely. Google Earth will help us properly identify land-locked bodies of water versus a true passage.

2. Hudson:
Cutthroat crew marooned him in the Canadian wilderness to freeze to death.
Solution: Post 9/11 security measures assure us that we are not traveling with potential ruffians, scalawags, or privateers.

3. Franklin:
Crew became icebound, demented and poisoned by lead in food provisions, did goofy things like haul carpet slippers and sheets of lead across ...

As for the North East Passage, you will note that Russia has steadfastly opposed any regulation to slow global warming, and it's not because they don't believe in it. They are banking on it.

Canada and Russia stand to gain a lot if the world gets a few degrees warmer. This should signal Very important power shifts.

I have to say my expedition to the Arctic insures none of the previous failures - as I learned in 6th grade archeology Eskimos aren't Chinamen their Mongols silly Frobisher (had he not heard of the Holy Book of the Land Bridge - it is my dogma). Next, I'm not actually leading the expedition. I'm instead organizing a gang of cutthroats to mutiny an arctic explorer allowing me to assume power while satisfying the history channels criteria for sufficient mutinyage during a tv special on explorers. And third! Instead of carpets and lead containers I'll bring linoleum flooring in bulk and aluminum containers for my food Haha! - fool proof!
