Not to excuse the poachers, but if there were only two, you'd think they would have been better protected.

I'll second that cniq! How sad in both respects...

I hope they find the poachers and cut off their horns (assuming they are male)!

Not only should the poachers be dealt with the person that hired them should also be convicted.
These people should be in the encyclopedias and history books as "Murderers of a Species"
I hope that embryos were kept so these animals may be reconstituted in the future. If not, What a loss to our children - Rhinos are cool.

Are these people f***ing retarded. Don't they know that they will be caught?

It's like stealing the Monalisa and not being able to sell it.

So sad

Sadly this kind of actions very well describe the state of the world at the moment. I'm afraid people will never stop before everything is lost

My genetics may be off here, but isn't the "white" simply a genetic mutation that could crop up in any breed from albinoism? Or is the white Rhino an actual species?

If they are a distinct species then couldn't genetic material be saved both from the dead and the living rhino to be used to birth more of them using invetro? Even if the technology is shaky now, it could improve enough to bring them back in the future. Poachers or not, if there were only 2 left then they were already extinct, they just hadn't died yet.

The white rhino is the wide-mouthed rhino. A grazer. A distinct species. The black rhino eats shrubs etc and has a more pointed mouth to grab the branches. (I think that's the difference anyway.)

I think ALL trade in ivory should be banned! Outright banned and coupled with steep penalties if you're caught with it. No one needs ivory, except for the animals. Stop the trade and you can perhaps stop the killing.

Not to downplay the importance of stopping poaching, but I think the key point here is "in Zambia." According to the story Zambia has run out of white rhinos before. The species isn't extinct, but sadly it seems poaching is still so bad that it is impossible to grow the wild population, at least in Zambia.

Well, scientists are working to revive many extinct species with genetic material degraded through long years. It is very conceivable that the species we lose today will be brought back.

tncbt is exactly right, however. The only reason these animals are being poached is because there is a market for it.

Unless we bring back their habitats too, reviving lost species will be futile.

The rhino habitat still exists (for now). The problem just seems to be nailing the assholes out there shooting them.

I was speaking in general.

Genetically engineering is not a magic bullet. We simply cannot allow different species to be wiped out with the hope of bringing them back one day. There may (for the rhinos) be habitat for now, but for how long? And what about all the other species on the brink? Genetic engineering isn't a not solution to extinction. Not only do we not have a fraction of the species recorded genetically, nor do we have technology good enough yet, to guarantee it and still there are even species yet to be discovered. They all need a place to live and thrive. We have to change our ways.

Example: Imagine all the tigers of the whole world HAD been wiped and those we have ...

Life finds a way. The only problem is that the life that finds its way may not be conducive to our type of life. Mutations happen all the time. Our carelessness could mutate an animal that is above us on the food chain. Are we prepared to become food again?

it makes me sad that some idiot could have killed the last of the white rhino's. i never knew of such a strong feeling of hate this world. the sun will not rise tomorrow. it is the end of days for mankind...... all because of poachers hey in one of my classes i have to write a poem about an endangered species and i chose this
