Actually before the recent Islam issues Wafa Sultan was my image of Muslims. Modern, urbane and pretty smart. The poor people back in the ME I viewed as at least aspiring to modernity and education as a way of pulling themselves out of the poverty trap. How wrong I was: Sultan's articulate defence of modernity was perhaps less eye opening than the buffoon of an imam who put up no credible argument other than Sultan was a blasphemer When you are mindful of the very real danger she and other courageous women consciously and willfully put themselves in for the sake of truth and against evil, you have to marvel and be filled with awe and admiration. |
