Just to add a quick summary of my understanding of this issue: If a Christian is "walking by the Spirit" he is fulfilling the righteous requirements of the Law. If he is "walking in the flesh" then he must acknowledge the sin (1 John 1:9) and receive the forgiveness that Christ provided....thus giving the ability to "walk in the Spirit" anew.
