Not making a decision is a decision.

One problem: It doesn't use the probabilities of each row happening. It does make you think, though.

It seems to me too simplified. Column A, Column B. I can make that decision at a Chinese restaurant. not about global warming.

What a film! What an instructor! This was the most thought provoking little video, I've ever seen. I hope it makes the rounds of the Internet in mach 2 speed. So that we can hear the sonic boom of information before the sounds of all life forms on Earth being struck down by this intangible, imponderable Global Warming Theory. I must say, there is a resemblance here, of the Aesop's Fable:
The Ant and the Grasshopper

IN a field one summer’s day a Grasshopper was hopping about, chirping and singing to its heart’s content. An Ant passed by, bearing along with great toil an ear of corn he was taking to the nest.
“Why not come and chat with me,” said the Grasshopper, “instead of toiling and...

This is the first time I've taken more than 2-3 minutes for a utube video (that isn't comedy) and been glad that I invested that time.

Sure, the argument is simplified but his point is valid -- a decision based on the evaluation of risks involved in all possible outcomes is a much better decision than knee jerk responses to media reports or continuous debate that allows us to feel involved while avoiding decision altogether.

It's seductively easy to become wrapped up in who is right or wrong regarding global environmental change. It is also dangerous. This is an excellent illustration of what we're risking every time we don't act.

I am not convinced by the "man made" climate change argument. I know that this puts me in a minority but my view is that the earth's climate has been changing ever since the earth has had a climate & many more times before the dawn of humanity. The voices of the anti "man made climate change theory" scientists (& let's not forget that it is still a theory) are drowned out by the scientific majority. But as has been said before - science isn't politics & majority decisions aren't proof of truth. Having said all of this I am not in favour of profligate human activity. Economy in all aspects of life is all it will take to address any theoretical man made climate change threat. This is a superb ...

A very good presentation and simplified. But he did make one mistake. If we choose column A. This does not mean loss of economy because of factories closing. It could actually mean the economy would grow because we would do things to lesson pollution.

We would ride bikes or better yet. We would finally use technology to create man powered vehicles. Some of that technology would be solar power. And that could be transformed into Hydraulic Technology.

The wind could be put to better use then what it is now. They already have designs that are more compact and can create more power output.

The rivers can flow freely. and with designs similar to wind generators. The flow of water can be harnes...

Very smooth. Even seductively so. But it is nothing more than a slick
superficial appeal for more government control over something that no
government can control.

Is the planet warming up?
Yes, in some areas it probably is, but in other areas it is cooling
off. Is Man causing it? There is no evidence that amounts to anything
beyond the junk science of Al Gore and his ilk.

I detest this
kind of activisim being presented as a well reasoned argument when it
is nothing of the kind. It is no wonder that kids come out of college
knowing nothing.

A brilliant exposition that goes to the essentials of the issue. The choice IS as simple as that. There is no argument.

This is a very old technique to frame any argument. It is highly simplistic -- the worst case scenario is so very overblown. What happens to the analysis if global warming does happen and there are few consequences?
Let's see? If we double our military spending and no other gov't or organization does not attack us, then no big problem other than costs to schools, the poor, etc. But, if an organization or gov't were to attack us and we were not ready, then our whole way of life would go up in smoke! Please, give me a break.

Yes, it makes me think. It makes me think that this guy needs to take a real science class that includes some history. "Brilliant exposition"? Oh please!

The problem is that all that stuff is well-known. However, the mankind is not arguing on choice between columns A and B, but tries to find out the truth about which row is correct instead.
When you have uncertainty, you have to operate with probabilities and game theory, it is so simple as that. Mankind pretends not be aware of this. Just for a few dollars more to take with them to non-existence.
That is deliberate self-deception and may lead to self-destruction or even self-extermination.
But do not worry: in terms of Universe it does not matter at all whether these species are going to survive or not.
So carry on, mankind. You are playing Russian Roulette, the lovely game specially designed for such civilizations.

I do agree that it would be a smart thing for man to try and stop global climate change.

Now bare with me on this thought so I can make a point. I’m not sure that trying to stop global warming makes a great deal of sense. The earth has been changing from the day it was formed. Nature has always adapted to the changes. From natures stand point, there really is no correct state the earth is meant to be in. Nature takes what ever condition the earth happens to be at the time and adapts to it. Currently, we are in the middle of one of the biggest and fastest phase of extinction the earth has ever experienced. Does that mean that the earth is doomed? Not in the least. The earth will ca...

So, I think what we should be trying focus on is making sure we stop killing off man’s life support system. The temp change will be a pain in the butt if it is true but to be honest, man and nature can adapt to such a change. What man really needs to focus on is stopping population growth, over fishing, rain forest preservation, etc. In other words, man needs to figure out just how much nature must be present before the whole life support system fails killing man off. We don't need to do these things because we are “left winged tree huggers”. We need to do these things to makes sure we don't cause our own extinction.

If you think that we will never cause our own extinction, think abo...

WHAT IF MAN'S ACTIONS HAS NO EFFECTS ON GLOBAL WARMING (WHICH I THINK IS THE CASE) AND THE IDEA THAT IT IS MAN MADE IS A GORE RUSE TO COLLECT "CARBON TAXES" FOR THE PROSPERITY OF A FEW?

ACTION WOULD MEAN GOOD GUYS PAY, BAD GUYS GET MONEY, AND THE SAME LEVEL OF CATASTROPHY WILL ENSUE..
