À primeira hora de 20 de março de 1968, o jovem Orlando Lovecchio Filho, de 22 anos, deixou seu carro numa garagem da avenida Paulista e tomou o caminho de casa. Uma explosão arrebentou-lhe a perna esquerda. Pegara a sobra de um atentado contra o consulado americano, praticado por terroristas da Vanguarda Popular Revolucionária. (Nem todos os militantes da VPR podem ser chamados de terroristas, mas quem punha bomba em lugar público, terrorista era.)<BR />Lovecchio teve a perna amputada abaixo do joelho e a carreira de piloto comercial destruída.
