It is clear as the sky in perfect day. The depression is the signal from a body that something wrong going on inside. When we paying attention to this signal and correct deviation, our bodies breathing with relief. But usually we masking and hiding this sign with medications, drugs, alcohol, nicotine, coffeine... you name it. Even with food as compulsive disorder. And paying price for that, usually most serious in the end of life.

Instead of this, in properly scientific thinking one should state: It is not yet clear whether some foods may protect against or increase the risk of depression [...].
Assuming that there is a causal relationship, what would be the cause, what the effect? Maybe people with a more pronounced predisposition for depressive disorder prefer processed food, for whatever reason? And people with a less pronounced predisposition for depressive disorder prefer whole food, for whatever reason? Maybe there is a connection with the concept of living, concerning its consciousness ...

interesting.............i suppose it is a bit of a chicken/egg situation (as in 'which came first?').
Either way I look at it, i can see the causal link between the two. In fact, it appears to be a mutually perpetuating downward spiral, really.
Frustration and stress lead some people to overeat and others to forget about food altogether. Considering the central role that food/meals play in our daily lives it stands to reason that they reflect (or in fact are a reflection of) our state of mind. I don't really know enough about all this to form an educated opinion on which way I believe the link goes.....but either way, I'll favour any argument that advocates plenty of fresh foods

aklimento is correct. We are what we eat. We are all capable of being depressed, not just "poor unfortunates". And not all depression is caused/promoted by food alone. The better the diet, the better the chance that our "selves" will be balanced.
