This is what I'm talking about when I say being in the closet is unhealthy. Some 47% of gays polled at AOL Gay and Lesbian are not out to their primary physicians. That surprised me, until I remembered that I live in a metropolitan area were I can find gay and gay friendly doctors easily. (I've actually made it a point to have a gay primary physician since I've been in D.C.) But then I remember there are a lot of people living in places where they can't easily find a gay doctor, and living in some pretty conservative areas where they aren't likely to find a gay friendly doctor. So, they have to be closeted in the doctor's office, where your live may depend on being able to be honest, and what you can't tell your doctor is most likely to go untreated. I'm beginning to think the closet should come with a surgeon general's warning. |
