<B>WARREN MURPHY:</B>  Dick Sapir and I decided we wanted to do an adventure series starring an American hero.  But we were just getting our feet wet for the first time -- neither of us had tried a book before -- and, believe it or not, Remo started out as a guy named Bernie, who was a crime-fighting psychiatrist in New York City.
