fta .."It's rather annoying. Every article I see on this subject makes this desperate rush to reassure their readers that this growing cohort of Americans aren't really those goddamned atheists — they're nice people, unlike those cold-hearted, soulless beasts called atheists, and they aren't planning to storm your churches and rape the choir boys and boil babies in the baptismal fonts, unlike the scary atheistic monsters. They're special. And most of all, they aren't French: "American nones are kind of agnostic and deistic, so it's a very American kind of skepticism," says Barry Kosmin, director of Trinity's Institute for the Study of Secularism in Society and Culture. "It's a kind of ... Atheism is not a state to be avoided. It does not distort your features so that the founding fathers would throw you out of the country as an undesirable alien. It does not give you a French accent. It doesn't even make you want to bomb churches. We are "rational skeptics," too, we're just the ones who aren't afraid to confront the social conventions that insist that you must be churched or in some way pious in order to be a good person — we are just the ones who will get in beatifically complacent faces and tell them they're wallowing in bullshit. So don't be reassured. Those "Nones" don't believe in a Bearded Ape of Cosmic Proportions, they aren't propping up the local priestly den of ign... That only 10% of us call ourselves atheists should not salve your fears. It's not that only 10% of the Nones call themselves atheists…it's that a whole 10% of the fastest growing beliefs in our our society are enthusiastic about openly tearing down and expressing contempt for those quaint religious institutions that have been shackling human minds in ignorance for so long. @John, excusez-moi ,but could you please explain to me what the French connection is? It refers to the quote from Barry Kosmin. Go to the source site where it's clearer due to formatting that didn't survive my cutting and pasting. merci John Eight percent in 1990? I wonder what it was back in 1962? No wonder I felt like such an outsider as a child. 8% able to admit it. Wait a minute! This clip has got 342 views in under 2 hours. What's going on? Probably think there's a take over plot afoot. Oh No! The Atheists are coming Sorry, couldn't help it. Still have a few catholic tendencies to get rid of. But seriously. My clip http://clipmarks.com/clipmark/974B1B49-6A0D-4DBA-B5F7-3E217B64B32E/ got 11 pops and only 150 views to date. How can this clip have got so many views so quickly. I'm a bit spooked! 12 pops. Okay, that is weird. It could be that it is getting hit by spammers which are automatically deleted by Clipdaddy magic. Could be. I suppose it's good newsAhem. 1) Why then? Indeed, spoken from a higher/scientific/neutral point of view: Why the heck is that "good news"? 2) Would the atheists' rise up to 100% make the world a better place? How so? Is there a non-ideological answer? 3) I will not be content until the number is 100%. (OK, 95%. It's not fair to demand rationality from people who are brain damaged or locked up in asylums.)Uh-oh. That's but a remarkably aggressive wording, no model for free thinking. 4) A 95-100% atheistic humankind would iterate the bloody intemperateness of religious zealots, I'm afraid. Why? Human idiocy doesn't care a shit whether it's atheistically or religiously backgrounded, that's why. Pops and comments represents those who don't like the idea of atheists, those who found too much to digest and those who are enlightened. Great clip. (I posted the article on which this critique was based. ) Why does everything and everyone have to be neatly placed with headings. Are we all fucking autistic. (Liverpool had a good win John) I enjoyed the clip and reading the comments. Thanks to all of you. Atheists need assurance from one another. Atheists need assurance from one another. I don't want to make fun of you jay8h, but the double posting seemed like something you described. I find it funny Wagging finger or not, Jan, methinks Jay is right in a double sense. What about an explanation, Jay? I believe Fortune smiled on Liverpool. I think the most important thing is to have a good heart, regardless where you stand on philosophy. |
