Bruce Walker:
"The Nazis also warned parents that children who went to religious schools would be discriminated against in employment."

"What happened in the 1930s in Nazi Germany, however, was preceded by what happened in Oregon in 1922. The Ku Klux Klan supported and passed the Compulsory Education Law which required that parents send their children to public schools and not private schools. The avowed purpose of this law was to get children "while their minds are plastic" and to turn the child into "a true American."

"Many on the Left today see public education as primarily a mechanism to mold children into people who will better fit into the vision that these Leftists have for America. Those tinkerers should know what good company they keep: they are following in the footsteps of Nazi Germany and of the Knights of the Ku Klux Klan. Educational monoculture is an invitation to tyranny."

1. Many on the left care about education primarily as a means for upward social mobility for poor people. They promote public education because they think that the private sector is unable and unwilling to provide a good quality education to poor people. We can argue about that, but it looks like Bruce Walker is oversimplifying the left's approach to education.
2. Public schools are an arena where activists from all over the political spectrum compete to have their "molds" prevail. Abstinence education vs. safe sex education. Multiculturalism vs. Great Books. Evolution vs. Creationism. Pledges of allegiance. It is ridiculous for Walker to single out the left for participating in the arena.

I guess the difference is that the Right cares about education primarily as a means of education for all people.

Whether he singled them out or not is perhaps based on the same biases you use to argue against him. The tone of his article is not against a particular form of education. It was an argument for ch...

Let us all just bask in a moment of profound revelation from JK, who is usually so guarded. What he is saying here is that there is a group to single out and manipulate ( upward mobility is an excuse, but we know better because Leftist programs never result in "upward mobility") for the purposes of achieving som social end, which is predominantly divisive, statist, and materialist.
