There is abundant evidence that many people are diagnosed depressed incorrectly. This doesn't help them and much worse it trivialises the genuine depressive illnesses which are dreadful. The epidemic of misery, unhappiness, despair, boredom and life dissatisfaction in the western world is genuine enough but requires broader non-medicalised analysis. And, of course, those suffering from sadness, bereavement or any sort of reactive suffering require the gentlest and most caring support - as was always the case before inevitable human suffering was turned into an illness.

“the proper sorrows of the soul”
That sounds accurate. Nomal sadness is deemed somehow a defect.

The depression is mostly social, cultural and even political phenomena rather than mental or medical.
