But should the government not be small? Should its powers not be limited so that it doesn't use its power to gain more power from the governed?

james, I don't think anyone wants government to be needlessly large. But government power is not the only, nor (in American history) the worst predatory power. I want a government that is strong enough to protect the powerless from those who are both powerful and corrupt. Examples abound, from slavery to Enron.

Also james, you subscribe to the wrong paradigm when it comes to government. It is not (necessarily) the size of government that is the problem but its effectiveness and the areas in which it exercises control plus how it exercises control. After all a lot of people that claim they want smaller government really mean they want the social aspects of government destroyed, but don't want to touch the most hideous expenditures from the system, ie, the so called "defense" budget.

Good point. Size isn't the point, just as in business - it's quality. Is GE bad and your neighborhood ice cream shop bad? Both government and business are most commonly done badly, but not because they are large or small, but because they are badly managed.
So slicing down government won't improve it, and getting absorbed with that only delays the real struggle. All that will improve it is rewarding quality and penalizing ineptitude, until it delivers what we pay it to deliver. Getting smaller might be a part of that - I'm just not sure. But getting better certainly is.

Glenn Beck's fans claim he "tells it like it is" He has no idea what "it" is. I would love to see Glenn Beck live one month on minimum wage. I want him to worry about what happens if he has to go to an emergency room uninsured. What happnes if his transmission dies. Once he walked in those shoes then we might consider, just might consider him as a spokesperson.
