Patient of methanol intoxication presents with nausea, weakness, headache and impaired vision. Retinal sheen may be seen on fundoscopy. Condition may deteriorate to visual loss, coma and death if effective measures are not taken. Patients of methanol intoxication also develop high anion gap metabolic acidosis. Increased osmolal gap is also present which helps to calculate serum methanol level. Increased osmolal gap is a non-specific finding and diagnosis is confirmed by specific serum assay. Clinical features and acid-base disorder occurring in methanol intoxication are due to toxic metabolic products whose production can be inhibited by giving ethanol. </DIV><BR /><DIV>Methanol is not hepatotoxic.
