Don't i know it! This clip is from a post on gigaom.com that analyzes/criticizes the fact that Google has tried 100s of new products and none have been able to be monetized other than search. An interesting perspective to consider and one that i'm painfully aware of myself.

I know there are some folks who are trying to make money on Clipmarks by excessive spamming. Any way we can get a handle on that?

Just watched the Wave video and I believe (as do many) it will be a game changer. So assuming that, one has to wonder, does Email make money? It is still free (mostly for the end user). But ultimately we have to go back, does Internet make money?

Eventually we have to realize that not everything revolves around making money, especially when it comes to those things which aide in evolving humans.

We try to get rid of the spammers as best we can...you'd be amazed how many of them are banned from the site either automatically by detection we have in place or by us manually. I am very sorry about the affect they have on the site.

There was a time I used to think that Clipmarks would be absolutely spam free because who in the world would take so much time and effort to register, login, CLIP and post. But it is amazing how and why they do it.

The only way to make a big, nearly impenetrable dent in spam would be to default all logged in users to clips by their Guides (similar to twitter). This way, you only get clips from people you have chosen to follow and spammers get no attention. It's definitely something i'm considering trying.

But, I don't use guides.

BartendingBear if we make the change to default logged in users to the My Guides feed, people who don't use Guides or who want to see what everyone is clipping would just need to clip the "Everyone's Clips" link in the header.

Egoldstein, I don't like that idea. I'd pretty much have to make all non-spammers Guides (which I don't want to do, and it would be very time-consuming as well), or continue to slog through the Everyone's Clips w/spammers included. I really don't think that would be very fair to new Clippers also.

There must be a better way to block spammers. Maybe Clippers could have an option of blocking Clip titles with specific keywords in it (like "Download" or "Dish Network.). Because if I see many more satellite TV ads, some serious slapping will commence.

I think Eric meant to type "click" the "Everyone's Clips" link. That's what I do now.

The primary time I find the spammers REALLY intrusive, WT, is when I access the "Newest Clips" tab after clicking "Everyone's Clips". The other most annoying time is when they have launched a assault of unrelated comments into a post I have made and my "Activity" tab information is scrolled off of useful info, filled instead by their spamming efforts, which our revered ClipDaddies have already cleared from the offended clip.

I do, though, find spammers offensive and obnoxious in their commandeering of the resources of the system for their personal gain without partaking in the true nature of the system. I...
