The article (and my comment) are both quite clear. The man went into a coma at the time that Poland was controlled by the communist party. From his own description, life during that time sucked real bad. Food/product shortages, unhappy people, and the heavy hand of the Kremlin on everything.

When he awoke out of his coma, he was astounded at how much things had improved since the downfall of the U.S.S.R. In short, life improved greatly for the people of Poland since the commies lost power.
I'm not really sure where you drew your remark from as it made no sense.
