  <P class="title"><STRONG>What is a statin?</STRONG></P><STRONG>Statins</STRONG> are drugs that typically are prescribed to lower cholesterol in people with or at risk of cardiovascular disease. They lower cholesterol by limiting a liver enzyme involved in cholesterol synthesis. Inhibiting that enzyme helps clear bad cholesterol (called low-density lipoprotein or LDL) from the bloodstream. Statins approved for use in the U.S. include lovastatin (Mevacor), simvastatin (Zocor), pravastatin (Pravachol), atorvastatin (Lipitor), fluvastatin (Lescol) and rosuvastatin (Crestor).
