Because this is an attack on Christianity only. This is not about atheism or religion. This is about attacking a select faith and meant to inspire anger. If you believe there is no merit in the Christian faith then leave it alone. If you claim to be atheist or non-religious then don't focus your mind on religion. If you are a Christian and are disenchanted and looking for an out then seek help with your turmoil. To focus attacks on any specific religion just reveals your capacity for hatred and discontent. This mindset is what is precipitating the sad state of affairs we have to deal with daily.
I don't read the Bible but I have one. My family reads it. I believe in the concepts that are trying to be established. I also believe in Islam and Budda's concepts as well as the scientific concepts as presented.
If I were in a room with all the religions and non-religions of the world represented by one person each. I would base my relations on the "Actions" of the people not their "Beliefs". While there are fanatics among all the groups the beliefs for the most part are trying to elicit a 'good' society. All have powerful messages to be communicated and all are worthy of respect by others.
With me, you do not have to defend your beliefs but your actions are accountable.

We are raised the say "One nation under god", implying that if you don't believe in god, you are not an American. A hill to the east of my city has a cross that lights up at night, there is a big battle to get the ten commandments in the city park, public ceremonies start with a prayer, people want to teach my children creationism as science, some counties in my state will not sell beer on Sundays, my president believes that Jesus will come back any day and is doing all he can to speed that up, my president sends my tax dollars to faith based in order to indoctrinate more children, on and on and on.

Christianity is one of the common beliefs of the lawmakers in this country. The morals of our country is established under the common belief of our people. Right or wrong, thats how it is.

Given the current state of affairs in our country now that there is focus on separation of church and state how are we better off now than in the past?

Do you really believe that Christians are dividing our country? I agree that religion is too powerful but I don't want to live in a world without it.
