Antibiotics have given us 50 years off. Viruses, and bacteria can adapt too quickly due to strength of numbers to chemicals designed to eliminate them. At the same time as we have been overusing antibiotics to accelerate the resistance, our immune systems have become weaker through protection, and isolation from the elements. The way resistance had developed was that if there was a particularly deadly strain, while many would have died, survivors would have children that were born with that capacity for repair. An antibiotic may cure a parent, but the child will not be born with the same resistance. It has to be administered again. The immune system has the capacity to adapt, drugs become useless quickly. While inoculation has some success in training the immune system, it has a limited range, and cannot be passed on. We have to work out how we can strengthen our immune system, perhaps expand it's capacity to adapt, and make it hereditary. We may never be able to do this. The worst thing we can do is pretend we have control of the situation. We don't know how viruses will develop, but a death caused by a virus is a byproduct of the virus's means of reproduction. If a virus attacks a host too aggressively, it will kill the host and have trouble continuing to reproduce. We can't predict how a virus will develop, we just need to keep working on treatments that do not increase their resistance. While remembering that technology has given viruses the ability to cover vast distances, in a short time, we should also try and improve ways of detecting, and identifying Microorganisms. Go from ways of killing them, to interfering with the way they operate and reproduce. As viruses get stronger so we will be made stronger.
