Antibiotics have given us 50 years off. Viruses, and bacteria can adapt too quickly due to strength of numbers to chemicals designed to eliminate them. At the same time as we have been overusing antibiotics to accelerate the resistance, our immune systems have become weaker through protection, and isolation from the elements. The way resistance had developed was that if there was a particularly deadly strain, while many would have died, survivors would have children that were born with that capacity for repair.
