that's a little over deterministic for me. I can accept the emergence of emotions (or, are they not feelings?) in correlation with survival, but once emerged, these emotions/feelings have a life of their own. Their 'purpose' would not necessarily be confined to the supposed trigger.

Ft, I agree. Of course! I am interested less in the theory of emotion than the implicit theories that underly theories of emotion (or any other overarching theories). Having said that, as my own main interest happens to be in theory of emotion, I am also keen to research all theories of emotion bracketed from the concurrent interest in the implicit theory of emotion underlying a theory of emotion (or any other overarching subject). Emotions are not the same as feelings in my own theory! Emotions are a cat's whisker from thinking, and discursive thinking in particular. (Also think the clip is meant a bit tongue in cheek, and certainly has to be read that way! )

wldcat, happy new year and so too to everyone else! Don't know who <mark devon> is except the author of the pdf and book referred to by clip. To me, is taken on the run, surfing quickly: another modelling/conceptual analysis of 'emotion', one among many, and there seems implicit reference to the many. What attracts me is: 1) the growing awareness of the fallacy of leaving the body behind as a meat vehicle for the mind; 2) the nature and dynamics of modelling; the particular tweaks and speculations in devon's models; 3) the uses of discursive reason in reflecting upon affective chaos. And more. Will probably buy the book to read as i come into land!
