If we want to understand someone else, we have to know what they are saying, but also what they mean. You need to get the feel of a word. With Chinese,Japanese,Arabic Tamil and many hundreds of other character formats, the characters can be a way of coming to terms with the way the language is expressed. It's amazing the lengths people will go to to help someone understand their language so that simple conversation can start and build with experience.I always remember that it can take someone the first four years to get the basics of their mother tongue,then to some degree our language degrees are set,but I can apply the principles of my initial education with a much wider perspective. I think the bottom line there can be a crash course in communication skills, but understanding can take more than a lifetime. Incidentally English is a patchwork language, some the consistency of other languages can be a relief.
