mis·sion /ˈmɪʃən/ Pronunciation Key - Show Spelled Pronunciation[mish-uhn] Pronunciation Key - Show IPA Pronunciation
–noun

4. Military. an operational task, usually assigned by a higher headquarters: a mission to bomb the bridge.

Just in case some forgot what a 'mission' was.
Wars are made up of many 'missions' and tasks.
So while one 'mission' is complete, the war is not.

bush said:

Admiral Kelly, Captain Card, officers and sailors of the USS Abraham Lincoln, my fellow Americans: Major combat operations in Iraq have ended. In the Battle of Iraq, the United States and our allies have prevailed. And now our coalition is engaged in securing and reconstructing that country.

In this battle, we have fought for the cause of liberty, and for the peace of the world. Our nation and our coalition are proud of this accomplishment — yet it is you, the members of the United States military, who achieved it. Your courage — your willingness to face danger for your country and for each other —...

We have difficult work to do in Iraq. We're bringing order to parts of that country that remain dangerous. We're pursuing and finding leaders of the old regime who will be held to account for their crimes. We've begun the search for hidden chemical and biological weapons, and already know of hundreds of sites that will be investigated.

We are helping to rebuild Iraq where the dictator built palaces for himself instead of hospitals and schools.

And we will stand with the new leaders of Iraq as they establish a government of, by and for the Iraqi people.

The transition from dictatorship to democracy will take time, but it is worth every effort. Our coalition will stay until our work ...

Uh oh, that is the key right there.

There seems to be an indefinite stand because apparently Iraqi people did establish their own government, so technically, the transition from dictatorship to democracy has been done.

But we're still standing with them. They must need more democracy, I guess.

LOL. are we seriously going to look back in hindsight and give this dooshbag the benefit of the doubt based on what the definition of *mission* is? wow. what a bunch of sheep you all are. a serious problem, glad it's not mine! long live the perception of reality!

The transition from dictatorship to democracy will take time, but it is worth every effort. Our coalition will stay until our work is done and then we will leave and we will leave behind a free Iraq.
This says it all. Regarddless of those who still don't understand what a 'mission' and a war is.

Tonight President Bush will address our Nation and will tell the world that Operation Iraqi Freedom's military action is over, at least insofar as major military engagements may be required. We know we will have continuing problems, like those we have seen in the last few days. But it is true we are now moving toward the second phase, which is the rebuilding of Iraq.

"are we seriously going to look back in hindsight and give this dooshbag the benefit of the doubt based on what the definition of *mission* is?"

well, no. but how about giving your president (and he is, no matter for whom you voted, or didn't vote) the benefit of the doubt of trying to help the Iraqi people (that is, the majority of those who aren't trying to extermine one another).
Everyone wants our troops to come home soon. But do we want to abandon the peaceful Iraqis to some nightmarish Cambodia Pol Pot regime that will rise up in our absence?

whatever dubya's speech may or may not have even said is a completely moot point...the bottom line is that our draft-dodging president staged this ridiculousand embarrassing photo op with himself cast as some sort of warrior king riding in on his chariot jet to the glowing adulation of a captive audience (the military), while this enormous campaign banner resolutely proclaimed that in no uncertain terms...
---MISSION ACCOMPLISHED
...what a f-in joke!!!!!

and who even listens to dubya's speeches anyways, they are completely unlistenable except for the hilarity created by his complete inability to speak in coherent thoughts or sentences.

So much irony in someone with such poor writing abilities criticizing someone else's speaking abilities.
