tabsey says: Don't often get to read articles like this. The whole article is worth a look. Unfortunately that is what war does to people Tabsey. This is a private, I would assume, and he is a Marine! They are made that way in boot camp. They are referred to as "devil dogs'. I have been to other countries and I can relate. Lebanon stunk like rotting corpses and I even saw dead animals floating in the waterway by the airport. I know that most of my 'First Impressions' of other countries were due to urban polluted harbor cities and ports of call but those impressions stick in your craw. The cleanest cities and ports outside the USA were in Norway and Spain. England smelled old Italy smelled briney Greece smelled like ass Turkey smelled like rotten fruit Morrocco smelled like industrial sludge I had the opportunity to travel away from a few of these ports to the inner country and the smells often lessened in pungentcy but they never really subsided all the way. Y... Wonder how they think we smell. I was in some of those countries you mention. It was 1969. But I doubt the time would make any difference. Greece and Italy did not have the smells you seem to think of. And anyone who visited those cities for vacations would probably wonder what you are talking about. But as to how these soldiers act. I also know a great deal about that. Its called war. It is where you put a person of good intentions. Only he sees nothing but the Hell and destruction around him. And yes, he will have kids begging. Even old men and women. What else can they do when you destroy their home. When you cut off their water and food. Maybe if someone would do that to us. Maybe then we would understand. I particularly liked this from the source: But the boys seem to be quick learners. Chances are one day theyMarcus Luttrell, former Navy SEAL, owes his life to that Pashtun society's values. He too acknowleged the squalor and meager resources in the tribal mountain villages where goats and roosters share the family shack, but he also immediately recognized honor and commitment to tradition. Instead he embraced the small herd of curious children, and they all laughed teaching him Islamic p... Please don't misunderstand me. My ports of call were in the harbors and that is where I detected the worst odors (except Lebanon, It was everywhere) I may have been tainted by the fisheries but that stayed with me. I do know that when I returned to Norfolk I didn't notice a terrible odor. Yes there was an odor but it wasn't 'overpowering'. It's probably just a personal thing. My sniffer is kinda sensitive. I can't get over how I wanted to let everyone take a shower that I met. Most of the people just seemed unwashed? I dunno maybe I made too much out of it? Article claims troops are 'culturally unaware' and don't know what they are fighting for. Surely that can't be right. Why would a human being travel to a place of which they know nothing prepared to kill foreigners for a cause of which they are ignorant? "Join the Army, come see far countries, meet exotic places, foreign people - and learn how to kill them !!"a caption (or better a sentence) i once saw on a Tshirt abailart34 Article claims troops are 'culturally unaware' and don't know what they are fighting for. Surely that can't be right. Why would a human being travel to a place of which they know nothing prepared to kill foreigners for a cause of which they are ignorant? They sent 19 year old kids to Vietnam. Told them nothing about the people there, other then they were either VC or Gooks. You learned on your own what you wanted to think about these people. Some only see an enemy. Because that makes their ugly job that much easier. But there were others that questioned what they were doing. I was one who questioned. And I saw them for who they really were. Poor working farmers with families. W... Frustratingly Sad |
