Iceland's environment minister, Thorunn Sveinbjarnardottir's account was disputed by the chief vet in the town of Blönduó, Egill Steingrímsson, who said he had the drugs necessary to immobilise the bear in the boot of his car. "If the narcotics gun would have been sent by plane, it would have arrived within an hour," he said. "They could keep tabs on the bear for that long."

The oldest record of polar bears being sighted in Iceland is from 890, 16 years after the first settlers arrived. The last visit was in 1993, when sailors saw a bear swimming off the coast of Strandir. It was also killed.

Polar bears were frequently tamed during the middle ages, but since then no bear has been captured alive in Iceland. Receding North Pole ice is diminishing their hunting and mating grounds and jeopardising their survival.

A spokesman for PolarWorld, a German group dedicated to the preservation of the polar regions and the creatures which inhabit it, called the bear's death "an avoidable tragedy ... another great day for mankind".

I have always liked Icelanders, generally speaking. So it comes as a bit of a downer realizing that , they too, have more than their share of simple-minded blood-crazed bastards among them.

First the whales, now this!

Hoe did the most literate nation come to this.

Couldn't they have fed this starving animal until they got the darts so it would not have been a danger to the public. To think of the effort it made to swim so far only to be killed so mercilessly.

That is so sad...how horrible! He probably could not find land or ice! He should have been welcomed as an amazing feat of nature instead of killed like some evil threat...threat??? He was probably too tired to do anything! Poor polar bear...Poor ignorant humans.

what, are their natural prey animals (deer-like things) all dead?

Their natural prey are mainly seals or other animals like walrus that live on or about the ice flows and icecap.

Do to global warming and other unusual pressures the bears, generally speaking, are having a very hard time of it.

WHAT THE F*CK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
humans are so disgusting. the way "we" think that we are the highest form of life on the earth... and how we think we have the right to control other species. it's murder if a human kills a human, but most of the time, it's not a crime to kill an animal. though we consider ourselves to be so advanced, the human race is unbelievably primitive. we're the only creatures on the planet who kill each other for means other than food and survival.
we will ultimately cause our own demise.

It is sad that human mentality of the 21st century is still inflicted by the "first shoot think later" attitude.
