According to sources at UNCHR and UNESCO, there are about 27 million people worldwide living in slavery right now.

It is very, very far from being gone.

The problem is that the information about knowledge & behaviour of modern society is not wellspread.

Just read in the paper today, a 23 year old woman in Somalia was put in a hole up to her neck and then stoned to death. She was pulled out three times to see if she was dead. When a relative and others surged forward (hopefully to try and save her) guards opened fire and a child was killed. She was charged with adultery. No mention of the man she supposedly committed adultery with. One word to describe that tragedy is "SICK".
