Kore7 says: When Peter J. Lu traveled to Uzbekistan, he had no idea of the mathematical journey that he was about to embark on as well.See the full research article as published in Science. It's a wonderful example of original, multidisciplinary academic research bridging history and mathematics that happens to force us to re-think the sophistication of ancient geometrical knowledge. When Lu looked at photographs of Islamic buildings, he found that he could break the patterns on their surfaces up into the same shapes, even though the shapes often weren't immediately visible. "I couldn't sleep for days," he said. "I skipped Christmas break to work on it." Thanks heavens someone has found something from the Islamic world that is sophisticated, original, and provocative in all the good senses of that word. Most everyone, even Muslims themselves, seem to have forgotten the contributions of this culture. It's gotten so bad now that many Muslims have developed a serious inferiority complex so much so they seem constantly in reaction to one supposed insult after another. Perhaps this work will start introducing the larger world to some of the "pluses" that exist today and have arisen amid Islamic culture. And it's also great to hear how possessed Lu became as he realize what was just before his eyes. I think there may be no greater intoxication th... Beautifully said, mdictu. I totally agree. Welcome to Clipmarks. hello, i checked this story out- but the newspaper i read told me about "decagonal quasicrystal geometry" and nothing else. i was left scratching my head. this really helps getting the complete picture. as for what muslims have achieved, apart from all their inventions, i love their contributions to poetry and music. sufi poetry is sublime... sample this by Rabia (He/ His is of course God) One day he didn't leave after kissing me (this is Daniel Ladinsky's translation. Just three lines and such proximity to God!) Thanks, also, to dropdedman. Insightful comments like these are an example of how, with increased participation, Clipmarks becomes more than the sum of its parts, and why I can't stop hanging out here. Historical data shows that Muslim architecture was not their own, but rather they pilfered the Byzantines. Anyone notice that all the angles total to nine? In numerology it's known as the number that posseses the knowledge of the other numbers. Add any number to nine & it will reduce to the the number the nine was added to(Ex.3+9=12 which is 1+2=3). Mulitiply any # by nine & it reduces to a nine. Lots of things like this happen with nine. It is a support # & one of universality. Some words that total 9 are: I, love, public, hug, oil, money, our, world, & Elvis Aaron Presley(His birthday(1-8-1935) also totals to a 9). I love the research that is going on here at clipmarks & would especially appreciate any interesting things related to math, numbers & numerology pointed my direction. Thanks for the clip Spiritraiser. |
