A long time ago I used to pay some attention to the wacko BS that some extreme Christians were teaching. Some of these people listed everything from the peace sign to the Star of David (no kidding) as either symbols of the occult or Satanic symbols (not that there was any difference in these people's minds between the occult and Satanism). The peace sign was explained as either representing a cross with broken arms or as being an ancient rune meaning 'death' that the nazis used. I don't believe that either explanation is true, but truth seems to be something these sorts of paranoiacs are not very interested in.

It has long struck me pretty weird how... drawing a few lines or putting some sticks in the sand in a certain pattern can cause such offense. I remember when I was shrieked at for leaving chopsticks upright in bowls of rice as a kid — my family feared i was summoning the dead, apparently!
