It was reported years ago, in a headline story of the St. Petersburg (Florida) Times, that a Russian merchant satellite had taken pictures of the Kuwait-Saudi border on the dates that the Bush administration claimed forces were amassed there and none could be seen in the two satellite pictures.

Furthermore the statement by McCain makes the point that unless oil independence is achieved we will fight more wars in the Mid-East over oil. So much for concerns about democracy.

Our presence in Kuwait and enforcement of the UN resolution all stemmed from the fact that Saddam Hussein was staging a power play in the region. If we had not acted in defense of Kuwait, then Saddam would have gone into Saudi Arabia, and UAE. He would have controlled a vast amount of oil and his propensity would have been for more havoc and domination. Considering that the US drives up the price of oil because of our dependence on middle eastern oil we are somewhat responsible for the safety of our friends (like Kuwait). If you want to act as though McCain was suggesting this latest conflict was about oil, then I suppose a case could be made. However, it is not even remotely in conjunction ...
