Wonderful. The irony of the Bush-Cheney years is that, in the end, having raised all these needless threats to Constitutional rights only to have them explicitly struck down, the presidency will be less powerful than it was before they came into office.

Bush and Cheney should be known as the bandits that forced the Courts and the Congress to intensify limits on presidential power (as with their fellow, Nixon). Perhaps the lesson is that things done by force and subterfuge are often undone with permanence when you're gone.

Or perhaps the lesson is that democracy works bottom-up; those things that are done from the top without the support of many don't last. Bush and Cheney took the cheap and dirty road; the result is Barack Obama and the undoing of their power plays.

I applaud the court ruling. It was always said the our own governments do more damage to thier citizens in reaction to to the terrorists than the terrorists themselves. When the Patriot Act was passed I believe it went through so fast a sa knee jerk no one on Capitol Hill even read it. What we need is more decisions like this - over here in the UK as well - we suffer under the similar Draconian legislation to handle terorists and now it is being used to arrest 80 year olds at political conferences that say "rubbish" and to freeze Icelandic banks funds! Sorry for the rant........

The Patriot act was written before 9/11... ready and waiting for them to make their move.

@Martin H

Didn't Britain say something about that the collapse of Island's economy was "hostile" to the UK, or something like that? A terrorist act or something to that effect?

I've been waiting to see this ruling. Kinda restores one's faith in the system don't you think?

Here it is:

With British investors faced with losses of up to £8 billion (€ 9.6 billion) in the failed institutions, including many local authorities and police services, the Brown government used anti-terror legislation to freeze the assets of Icelandic banks in Britain.

While it does give hope, capri, that hope is dim and damp in the face of so many other pressures.

Time, we have time on our side. I want everything yesterday but as now I am getting older I tend to realize that sometimes we don't always get what we want when we want it, and that still pisses me off but now I just kinda accept it. Change is coming I'm sure.
