I guess if the photo provides inspiration for an international relief effort, then it was worth it (as long as the photographer pulled her out after he/she took the shot). A pop for the website and all those gory pictures. Reality stinks. I agree. I have often wondered on how the photographer is more interested in getting these shots than saving people. Selling photographs is more important to them than saving lives.. The girl in the picture is Omayra Sánchez (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Omayra_Sánchez). She was a victim of Armero's tragedy on 1985. The case had extensive media coverage while rescue efforts took place. Despite trying for about 3 days, rescue teams could not save her. Thanks for that piece of background, according to which this photo is over twenty years old. |
