abailart says: In fact, behind your question is the fundamental problem of the degree to which behaviour is innate and to which it is acquired – an essential question that philosophers and scientists have been debating for centuries. This remains an ideologically-charged subject, which the media adore. Absolutely. The media often echo works that argue that cerebral specialisation differs between male and female. They say, for example, that language functions are undertaken by both hemispheres only in women’s brains. What do you say? The theories on the hemispheric differences between the sexes in language appeared over thirty years ago. They have not been confirmed by recent brain imaging studies which allow us to see the living brain at work. These theories are often based on observations carried out on very small samples – often a dozen people. People continue to quote these studies whereas contemporary scientific reality is very different. Meta-analyses, which draw conclusions from all the exp ....experiments published in scientific literature and cover several hundred men and women, show that there is no statistically signi ficant difference between the sexes in the hemis pheric distribution of language zones. This is explained by the fact that the location of these language zones differs considerably from one individual to the next, with this variability being more important than a possible variability between the sexes. Another proposed idea is that the male brain is more suited to abstract reasoning, in particular mathematics. These conceptions have no biological foundation. >>> See source. Short and valuable corrective to media mumbo jumbo. I really think our culture makes too big a deal about gender roles. I'd love to discuss this with you abailart, but my experience has been that whatever position a man takes on this issue, I have the tendency to take the opposite. No big deal. The word 'sex' itself is culturally gendered. The thrust of the article is about how ideology is ignored by neurofreaks., sex and gender being a vehicle to carry the idea. Talking of thrusting, goosey, goosey gender: men swing every which way too if they haven't submitted to being chained, or, given the plasticity of role potentials, swing the more precisely because of their submission to being chained. Now Hush Abailart, You know it's great to be a guy cuz none of your co-workers have the power to make you cry. Right? No one ever gets to work with me. A few get to play but they have to pass a very stiff test first. Stiff tests are under rated. Well, I see the conversation has taken a turn, but getting back on track.... Yes abailart, I agree with what you're saying about guys and also about the media. And perhaps the "neurofreaks" should just report the facts and stop thinking at all. Say, there's nothing like hearing a dirty old women and a dirty old man trying to out do each other being dirty. clean/dirty, young/old, civilized/savage, man/woman, innocent/debauched, good/bad, totem and taboo... Levi Strauss surely had it right. Dirty and old, I shall sneak away from Paradise into the wilderness before the Angel of the Lord comes to expel me. |
