Please bear with me though. It's important. Right after finishing art school in 1975 I decided to do something I'd always wanted to do- learn to fly a balloon. I joined a balloon club here in Houston. You started by always being on the "crew". When you crewed, you got up early, stomped around in wet grass, got mosquito bitten, and helped lay out the balloon. You followed along on the ground during the flight, then got to reverse everything you'd done the hour or so before after they landed. It wasn't glamorous or particularly fun. You did it because you wanted to learn to fly. I crewed a lot of a 6 month period and became friends with many of the pilots. Eventually, they started giving me lessons. I took and passed the FAA test for both a private and commercial license. I still have my log book documenting all my flights. One day a friend took me up a mile over Houston.
