Hormones have a protective effect on bone density by decreasing the rate at which bone is broken down. Osteoclasts are the cells which break down bone and osteoblasts are the cells which build up bone. The process is called bone remodeling. When bone breaks down more quickly than it is built back up, bone density decreases and the bone loses strength.
