But last year, after several cases surfaced of illegal aliens enlisting in the military using counterfeit documents, the Defense Department told the Military Entrance Processing Command to begin verifying alien registration and Social Security numbers with the appropriate federal authorities. This may mean that many illegal aliens who have enlisted since are case s of identify-theft.

There are currently about 37,500 foreign nationals from over 200 countries serving in the active duty forces and reserves . The law currently provides for expediting the citizenship applications of U.S. service personnel, who become eligible to apply the first day they enlist. ……

Service by illegal immigrants is another matter entirely. The penalty for emerging from invisibility varies from case to case. Some have faced discharge and even deportation from the country they have sworn to defend.

This linked article would seem to indicate that illegal aliens would make up a very small percentage of our troops and thus could not account for the crimes in the above listed NY Times article.

But the linked article does not include statistics, P-values, dispersion around the mean, t-statistics, level of significance, or hypothesis testing so I expect the usual derision from at least one of the previous commentors.

You make huge leaps in reasoning. The Village Voice article admits that there are illegal aliens in the military. However there are standards in place (that can be circumvented) to allow legal permanent residents possessing green cards to serve in the military. This program which requires Identity and social security checks by nature reduces the amount who are illegal.

You were claiming that the numbers of military serving who have criminal records was significantly skewed by illegal aliens and there is not evidence nor logic to support that hypothesis.

There is some commentary that suggests military bases are hiring illegal aliens (link) which, at least to me, would better explain the need for ESL's. For that matter I have worked with a lot of individuals possessing green cards who didn't have the greatest grasp on English.
