This can be seen in the fact that several of today's most prominent neocons started out as liberals, as did ultra right wing cartoonist Carl Moore (State of the Union). I've read in a couple places that it is not unusual for people who make a major life change such as their political or religious affiliations, often choos a stance that is as radically removed from their former position as possible. If I ever track down a source for that information, I'll post it here.
