abailart says: /www.youtube.com/watch?v=KN-j9H0nIDs Wonderful clip. The first image is of an ordinary or Penny-farthing style bicycle. They were/are quite devilish in their demands on the rider in many ways. The solid tires make for a jarring ride. The precarious seating position means only the most determined should attempt the feat, and a tossing onto one's head is a very real danger. The effective ratio of wheel size to pedal travel means a very strong rider is required for any trip. Surprisingly, I once knew a fellow who actually managed to ride a century (100 miles) on such a machine in one very long day. Needless to say he was legendary among the local riders. |
