I think it is in the intent behind the comment which makes the difference but then it pays to be able to laugh at one's self as well. So even if the intent is not so well meaning it slides off like "water on a ducks back".

Who's to judge "the intent behind the comment"? I was once a "pommy" and it was indeed "water off a duck's back" whenever I was called one!
