yamdablam says: A number of people would have agreed, who had no idea what they were agreeing to. It's one thing to do this kind of work, which seems something that is bound to be pursued because of the potential seen in gene manipulation, especially if you draw from a planetary gene pool. To say that research is justified because of an opinion poll is a bit lame. Ethics are not the problem, it is ignorance. We cannot expect to be able to safely transfer genes with what we know about genetics today. Looks like we'll have to find out the hard way again. Maybe this time we'll be lucky. Research and application are a double edged sword. The sword is getting sharper. We need to be more careful with it. I don't understand the fuss. Groups against genetic research will also allow Genetically Modified crops. This is a developing science which promises to be the only hope for many and yet the stupidity of church and other meddling groups allows us to watch people die, usually loved ones. I enjoy using emotion against the mindless killers among the conservatives. I agree, justification by poll is absurd to say the least. Personally, I think the waters are being tested here to see how people will react to such developments and to gage their reaction to more extreme research that is taking place. Its also well know that opinion polls are one method of building consensus. It goes back to before World War 1 when opinion polls where first used by the British to muster support for the Boer War in South Africa. I'd bet that the work has already been done as why spend money on research that has the possibility of failing outright? Don't research agencies do work in particular fields as requested by the funding bodies? This entire area is fascinating to m... |
