“I’m not trying to defend it," he said. "I’m simply saying there should be due process. We don’t start with a conclusion. We start with an investigation and an analysis.”

Jackson acknowledged that race could be one of several reasons why President Obama has received strong opposition to his healthcare reform crusade.

“It may be a factor, but confusion is a factor. Misunderstanding is a factor, and fear is a factor. So, we must get beyond that — because healthcare costs are rising, because the insurance companies, the pharmaceuticals and hospitals have runaway costs without checks and balances.”

“That’s why the public option is important,” he said.
