creepysleepy says: This story has been under reported but is of great importance to Federalists and activists. Having spent six years living in Lakota country, the weight of this story is immense. It's my hope that that Lakota are successful and they have all the support of Creepy Sleepy. I didn't realize you lived in Lakota country... I wish I understood this story better - it seems that this could have some serious negative consequences for the Lakota, and while I get that it's a powerful symbolic move, I don't really know what they'll gain from it. One significant aspect of this story is the strength and resolution of the Lakota. Many Whites dismiss the Lakota as 'drunk indians,' or have a condescending 'great spiritual indians!' mentality. Though this is a symbolic act, it dispels both myths and highlights the military, social, political, and economic injustice that the US has perpetuated against the Lakota. There are petitions circulating. If you check Care2.com I think there's one there. I'm sure they will need the public behind them. The only problem with this story is that Russel Means isn't a representative of the Lakota tribe. He ran for president of the tribe once and lost. He is nothing more than an activist and has no authority within the tribe at all. This whole thing is about as valid as if Al Gore went to the UN and signed the Kyoto treaty. |
