I almost always disagree with Joe Carter, not being an evangelical or a conservative, but there's something very heartening about this blog post. He is basically making a call for moderation, civility, and respect for difference on the part of the so-called Christian Right.

Just for my own understanding, would you mind clarifying what you mean by the "so-called Christian Right"? Is there a "Christian Left"? How are they different? Are they both really Christian?

I think I'm the "Christian Right". But I really need to understand and realize what these *titles* mean so I know what other's mean by their descriptions. I had to look up 'neo-con' to see if I was one of them too. Labels are difficult sometimes.

You're right, it's a slippery term. It's not one I use regularly myself. I'm just adopting Joe Carter's usage here. I take him to mean people who identify themselves both as Christian and as politically conservative, with a tendency towards evangelicalism, but that's admittedly pretty vague. On this definition, yes, I guess there would be a "Christian left." There's obviously a major difference, though, since there is a well-organized political movement that tends to be comfortable identifying itself with the "Christian right" and there's no similar such thing on the left (unless you count Jim Wallis and the Sojourners organization). I guess that if you [i]thin...

Thanks enbar.

It's only been since I discovered the internet that I realize what a threat my family and my beliefs seem to be to others. Scary.....

More likely we’ll all be asked why we didn’t spend more time concerned about our neighbors in Darfur or fighting the pandemic of AIDS. Perhaps we should rethink our priorities and put the first things first.
Why haven't you?

(this of course is aimed at those being spoken about in the article, ie: the "Christian Right").

Please notice that the emphasis should be on "more time" for my question. I know you (again the "Christian Right") do spend time on fighting AIDS and trying to make the world a better place in your views (if not beliefs.. that's another topic).

What if everyone -- on both the left and the right -- thought and spoke this way?

That would be a wonderful world to live in. We could actually have conversations about the areas where we agree, and do good work in those areas.

I believe we could find many areas of agreement -- but we seem to focus on our differences. And we could talk about our disagreements without slandering each other.

jatfla,
Liberal Christians have broader views on salvation and interpret the bible less literally than fundamentalists.
Liberal Christians believe although the Bible is divinely inspired, human interpretation is never infallible.
I find this article encouraging in it's call to move the religious right's "moral values" out of the crotch area into a call for economic justice and peace.
A call for the religious right to embrace the Jesus of the beatitudes is truly inspiring.

debbyski...would you mind e-mailing me privately? I have a question and don't want to involve "the world" or entice them.

I can’t make excuses for us on this one anymore: We have to take a firm stand against torture. Yes, there is a debate about what exactly is meant by that term. So let’s define it in a way that consistent with our belief in human dignity. And then let’s hold every politician in the country to that standard. Our silence is embarrassing.
