Good to see a start in the right direction. Once we can get rid of fossil fuels altogether that would be even better.

This is great...very exciting news!!! The only disappointing thing is that, according to the article, the White House indicated President Bush might veto the bill. That would be extremely sad.

Here's a little something to ponder: There is no such thing as "corporate taxes". This is a tax that is going to hit YOU squarely at the gas pump. Plain and simple.

This should have been done in the 60s and 70s. Perhaps we would already have a renewable energy source by now.

Sadly I know you are right.

So, society? When is it going to be enough profit?
At what point does making profit become insignificant?
At what point does it become worthy to reintroduce the money back into the people?
Profit is surplus money that is left over after the overhead is met. Once you have more money than you could hope to spend, why want more? Why not put the money into the hands of the people that need it? Why not make electricity free or water service free or basic medical free or education free or clothing fre...

I would rather pay corporate taxes at the pump to free us of Middle East dependency on oil then to fund the military/industrial complex in another war to secure oil fields.

We already have great strides in alternative energy.
And they all require people working together and earning a good living. We really don't need the monopoly of oil corporations to tell us what to do and how much to pay.

But we need a Government that is not on the take from
these companies. We need leadership that says the
alternative sources will give people jobs. And at the same time save them money from their own energy usage. It will be a win for the majority of workers and consumers.

And it will only hurt the few CEOs who get a million dollar bonus. And those who are on the take.

What we need is a government who is not going to take kickbacks and put it in there pockets.
We have oil that is being pumped out of the U.S. every day, and most of it is going over seas. That needs to stop!
We need alternative fuels, so we don't have to rely on the big oil companies.
We need to use what we have here, and give the big oil companies the middle finger.

Napster, I'm not suprised by the abject level of understanding of most clippers.

However, I have the highest respect for your clarity and vast knowledge of most issues. Surely you know this is political bill and one that actually benefits so called "Big Oil". Don't you?

This bill will only have the opposite result of what many believe.
The US will never be able to compete with OPEC on any level until we become independent of foreign oil and that means first increasing our own production and tapping new sources.

This bill has 2 purposes only. 1. to apply pressure to OPEC to reduce price and increase production and 2. create a social structure for carbon-trading to create a stucture for f...

I guess it should also be stated that corporations do not pay taxes. People (individuals) pay taxes. "Big Oil" will not pay anything here.

Economics lesson: When you raise taxes on a corporation, they a) lay off employees, b) cut back on investment, c) raise prices, or d) all of the above.

I was hoping you would set me straight, Napster. Where am I wrong? I know you know.

I see backlash happening in one of 2 ways on this:

1. The president vetoes the bill, and is demonized for saving 'big oil' more money.

2. The bill passes and people feel the pain at the pump (yet again).

It is truly a no-wim situation, based on those outcomes, but I was hoping it would raise awareness of the whole petro-chemical industry and how the strings are attached tightly to your wallet.

Wilhelm- I don't have all the 'answers'. I just call em like I see em.

I wasn't being flippant. You seem very knowledgeable about many issues, both common and obscure. I was just wondering where I was off thinking-wise.

New taxes won't free us from middle east oil dependence, they just eat into disposable incomes. If you really support a reduction in middle east oil dependence, you should support allowing us to drill for resources we have here that we aren't allowed to touch right now.

That would only delay the inevitable, not to mention that fossil fuels are toxic and still somewhat hazardous to extract. Going to places unexplored will not lower the price because:

a) These areas are more remote, so the cost of exploring and exploiting them rises along the difficulty of extracting ans shipping said resources.

b) The glut is on refinery space (at least in the short run). All the crude in the world is worthless (except maybe for lighting oil lamps) unless refined.
