zizzy says: see clip source for specifics of the argument Hasn't English always been a polyglot language? Where ever English has been spoken/written, it has always taken on a local flavor. A favorite quote: "The problem with defending the purity of the English language is that English is about as pure as a cribhouse whore. We don't just borrow words; on occasion, English has pursued other languages down alleyways to beat them unconscious and rifle their pockets for new vocabulary." Great quote Lexica (want that t-shirt) and so true debby. In Thailand people say "same, same" and one of my Egyptian friends says, "I will catch you," instead of I will arrive at whatever time. As an aside: I love it when I go to Thailand and the driver who meets me at the airport holds a sign with Mr. in front of my name. In SE Asia I am Mr. or Madame (sometimes both), depending upon the people and the situation. |
