 clip-on-tie says: While I think that it is a good idea to talk about modifying the 180-day, September-June school calendar that has become as much an American tradition as fireworks on the 4th of July, I don’t quite see the need for this to become a national issue, or for the Federal Government to mandate that schools modify their calendars based on a decision made by a bureaucrat in the Department of Education. As with most things in the education field, this is a matter best left to school boards at the local and state level and to the parents of the children being educated. But then again, what the hell does Obama care about American tradition....unless he's apologizing for it.... Well those kids don't look very happy and the teachers look like they're gonna get sick. I don't think this is going to go over real big. I'm not sure if adding extra days to the school year will make any difference, but the fact is, a great majority of the kids are not learning even the basics. It blows my mind how many people don't even know how many states are in the US, how many stars are on the flag, or that the two facts have anything to do with each other. It seems that today's youth wants nothing more than to receive instant wealth by becoming pop singers, reality show personalities, or by suing someone. Back in the day before such vehicles, dreams, goals and aspirations included becoming doctors, scientists and other professions of substance. Now, everyone wants the life of luxury and they don't want to have to work ... Question: You have a dog and send it to obedience school to be trained. Several months later and after a hefty bill for their services, the school tells you they have failed. Would you be inclined to send your next dog to the same school? Why do we put up with this with our children which are infinitely more valuable then our pets? |
