laceym says: Reason is a compulsion, not a choice. Just as one cannot intentionally startle oneself, one cannot knowingly believe a proposition on bad evidence. To believe a proposition, we must also believe that we believe it because it is true. While lapses in rationality can often be detected in retrospect, they always occur in the dark, outside of consciousness. In every present moment, a belief entails the concurrent conviction that we are not just fooling ourselves. Faith enables a person to fool himself into thinking that he is maintaining his standards of reasonableness, while forsaking them. There is a powerful incentive to not notice that one is engaged in this subterfuge, of course, because to notice it is to fail at it. ...every religion has created a black market for irrationality, where people of like minds can trade transparently bad reasons in support of their religious beliefs, without the threat of criticism. I love Sam Harris To believe a proposition, we must also believe that we believe itCouldn't have said it better myself. Faith enables a person to fool himself into thinking that he isI Couldn't have said it better myself. We all have faith. It is just that we have faith in different things. ...every religion has created a black market for irrationality, whereA certain level of irrationality exists in everything man does. Certain segments of the faithful are no doubt not exempt. However, this does not diminish the object of the faith. To claim that it does would be a fallacy. As far as this the point referenced above goes, it is a condition of humans not a condition of the faithful. We only see a sliver of reality. Those of faith just see with a little more humility. What makes God side so attractive is the truth, you can build on what you learn. And there is no waste of energy for lies. Logically, the truth can be lived without inner compromises, without self-made schizophrenia. "Faith enables a person to fool himself into thinking that he is maintaining his standards of reasonableness, while forsaking them. There is a powerful incentive to not notice that one is engaged in this subterfuge, of course, because to notice it is to fail at it." Genius! This is a perfect description of what's going on! And the everyone KNOWS it! What makes God side so attractive is the truth, you can build on what you learn. And there is no waste of energy for lies. The Muslims have great faith. The Christians have great faith. They both require and are based in faith. And yet they both cannot be true at the same time. There are millions of believers in each faith. There is clearly a great waste of energy for lies (even if one side turns out to be right). Faith cannot determine truth. It is inherently wasteful. Time is mostly wasted on who's religion to believe in and who's philosophies to consider false. Time that could be used to advanced technologically, spiritually, and as human beings... so stop watching TV (all the time) and worrying about material things. improve yourself a little bit each day by finding out what interest you, and explore the world(this website rocks for that) Back on what AcesLucky was saying: It's energy that could be used in trying to find out ones own happiness rather than finding a happiness that will fit for everyone. Have faith in finding your own definition of happiness, and don't pressure anyone else to use your definition. |
