I show my ignorance again. But could someone explain the practice of swearing allegiance to the flag? In many movies during my childhood this was always recited in the class room. Does this occur, and what does it mean?

I used to say this at public events when required Brimmy:

"I pledge allegiance to the flaga of the United States of America. And to the republica for which it standa, one nationa under Goda, indivisible, with liberty and justice for alla.

OK, I admit it was a bad joke, but it was always met with nudges from all my friends and silly laughter and stern looks from those with no sense of humor, but it got me through the day.
