thisnamecantbetaken says: The Lord told me to clip this. The Rapture Index (omens portending the Rapture) stands at 163, the highest it's been since September 11, 2001 when it peaked at its all-time high of 182. I don't know what the numbers mean either. But I'm not making this up.Anyway, I'm not worried about 'the Rapture' one little bit... Jesus, he knows me. I knew it was Genesis even before I clicked on the link. Thanks TNCBT! You know me too well! Before I get too far into this, I want it understood that I'm notIt is an odd way of telling the story of Jesus. Through its advocates say they're taking the book of Revelation literally, their interpretation is far from literal. Their misunderstanding of Apocalyptic writing abounds. In their eyes, it is a Christian holy war where God and Jesus fight on their side. This is, quite frankly, a horrific vision o... What they fail to understand is that the historical biblical context of the occasion for writing an apocalypse was always a period of crisis during which righteous people were persecuted and threatened with death at the hands of their enemies. This style of biblical writing was a "code" of sorts that the Christians of that period understood very well. It was to give hope to those who were persecuted. good comment debbyski, everyone tries to project modern stupidity into ancient realities they know little of. Modern Christians blame Jesus, or Satan because they have lost control over their own lives. For them, someone or something else did it to them. Not just limited to Christians of course but they certainly have their version of it. So when do we all learn to take responsibility for the condition we find ourselves in? Unfortunately, if there is a Rapture, the few true christians (small c) will float away to Heaven but the obnoxious, self-righteous, hypocritical, fundamentalist masses who wreak havoc on the world in the name of Christianity will remain here with the rest of us. To their great surprise, no doubt, which is some consolation, but to our everlasting torment here they will remain. Perhaps that is the ultimate Hell on Earth. I need a bumper sticker that says "When you Rapture, can I have your car?" Got several cars lined up myself, from some horrified Bible thumpers... another 1000 years later... "The end is nigh!" What if it already happened? Can you be sure it has not? Well Skwirl, More fanciful and lucrative notions such as the 'Left Behind' Series require a belief that the book is prophetic and thus needn't refer to events in the early Christian era. I would put "rapture" in my Bin of disbelief except it's far too precious to waste on such foolishness. In that Bin I put what I relentlessly oppose and reject: discrimination and oppression, homophobia and patriarchy, injustice and violence and force and empire. but the obnoxious, self-righteous, hypocritical, fundamentalist masses who wreak havoc on the world in the name of Christianity will remain here with the rest of us! You know what k9? I was speaking to someone this weekend who told me it didn't matter who they voted for this election, none of that was important because they saw Scripture being fulfilled before their eyes, and of course our political leaders on the right will continue to exploit that sort of nonsense in their quest for power, money, and control. My daughter has a friend whose parents believe that the world will come to an end if Clinton or Obama is elected president... and not because they are Democrats. IMO, the Christian rapture has already happened and what we have been left with are the very people gingembre described. IMO, the Christian rapture has already happened and what we have been left with are the very people gingembre described.Yes but they are the ones who have made the loudest voice by getting organized in their mega churches to put out the vote. It's like the "chosen few" in high school who we all let run the school and it's our fault if we continue to let them elect officials who pander to them. Well this is certainly a "take" on the Rapture I had never thought of....kind of liked it, until the comment about all of those "Christians" we would be left with....not so keen on that! Also love your handle "thisnamecantbetaken" - I can feel for you! I'm in the middle of the Southern Bible belt, and have to be VERY careful what I say and who I say it to....tiresome, to say the least. Saw a bumper sticker I loved the other day in liberal Chapel Hill, NC, home of UNC - "The Religious Right is Neither" - love it! Someone told me I should read the Left Behind series. I told him that after he was gone, there'd be plenty of free copies lying around. I read that series because I wanted to see how it played out. Definitely a book dedicated to making its audience happy and letting them hear what they want to hear. I mean, if you can't see the light they paint the bad guys in as a desperate attempt to justify Christians then this books was obviously written for you. I understand all the evil vs good and Satan is a bad guy shtick, but come on. It's like the author took every moment to write the evil guys as this big brain dead clowns, all worked up about appearance and protocol. They stumble over each other like Stooges, dress and appear like full flame on Liberace, and are too stupid to realize even the dumbest tactical mistakes in their m... Left Behind is in the fantasy section isn't it? Not everywhere ... My Christian friend says that, if the Rapture happens, I can have her car. What a deal! |
