The end of a "Sun" (5125,36 years "age") is not based upon a religious or superstituous belief but it marks an "earthly catastrophe" caused by a periodical celestial event which is expected to affect not only the "daily lives" of the people by introducing new circumstances but also the economical, sociological and political dynamics of the human societies. Ancient Mesoamerican sources don't give much details about it, but by deciphering some clues, scholars believe they mentioned a series of geological events (i.e. consequent large quakes and volcanic eruptions), triggering a radical atmospherical event (like a "volcanic winter" effect that took place around 1650 BCE).

I agree with you on your approach about the gravitational force and suspects about the Sun (there must be something related to the Sun, if those people named the "world ages" like "1st Sun, 2nd Sun, 3rd Sun" etc.) My personal opinion is, the 13 Baktun date could be the end of a cycle (maybe a long orbital period or something like that) at which point an object or a large mass (witnessed and known by the ancients but yet unknown to us) makes a close passage near our solar system; affecting the sun and in turn, the gravitational forces on our planet.

Mayan Calendar is not the only tradition that proposed a millennial cycle related to celestial events through a stargazing astronomer priest tradition. Similar (but less accurate or generally "vague") material comes from Pueblo Indians, Navajo tradition, Hopi myths and the Incas of the South America.

Of course, there's still no "solid evidence" and all theories are hypotetical for now. But as you said, if we live long enough, we'll see what happens in and after the year 2012

I can also see though, that many religions, would most certainly interpret it as a spiritual event, so therefore seen through the eyes of believers, it would be. The word Apocalypse may be a very fitting description. An "unveiling" of a new beginning for the survivors. And who really truly knows for sure? Until the day the existance of a supreme Creator is once and for all either refuted or confirmed, the possibility still theoretically exists, of some sort of literal spiritual event. Maybe it was all planned to be this way from the beginning? Maybe not? Whatever the 'cause' hopefully the effect would be a more sustainable stewardship of the Earth and social responsibility after that. That people will wake up!! and see that we are all in the same boat on this planet and we should all be nicer to each other and to Mother Earth. A Utopia? Both are extreme scenarios and my imagination is running wild here, but just imagine the possibilities? But let's just wait and see....

I think the orbital cycle you're talking about, could be the Procession of the Equinoxes, but I have only just started getting into this and scratched the surface, so I'm not sure.
