December 21st, 2012. I probably won't be home that day, but I'll catch it later on youtube, I reckon. Jokes aside, they say the Mayan (or Atzec) calender is the most accurate ever made. Their doomsday is not so much about the end of time, but of the beginning or dawn of a new age of enlightenment. I think it's worth a gander.

This video explains the Mayan calender pretty well. Part one of three;
The Mayan Calender Unveiled

Actually, the Mayan Calendar is the product of a very sophisticated and accurate astronomical wisdom of an ancient culture. As you stated, the end date on the Winter Solstice of the year 2012 (Originally 13 Baktun) is very far from being a "doomsday prophecy", nor a metaphysical or "spiritual" awakening or something like that. According to Maya tradition, this date is not "end of times", it's basically "end of a time cycle" they call "The 5th Sun". No "apocalypse" or any kind of escatology here. Mayan stargazing tradition has its sources and roots from Olmecs, which in turn took the "sky records" from older wisdom, those we now call La Venta / San Lorenzo culture (probably the earliest sourc...

Start with video then alanocu. It's sort of like "The Mayan Calender for Beginners" *LOL*

That besides, what will happen on that day, is a Galactic alignment. The Solar system will pass through the disc of the Milky way and when the Sun is at it's solar maximum, the system will exactly aligned to the Galactic Equator. On December 21st, 2012, we will be exactly level with the crust -- forming an "x" at the Galactic Equator where galactic gravity is the strongest. Not only will we be intersecting with the Galactic Equator, but we will be doing this precisely aligned with the center of the Galaxy where there is maximum mass. More mass means more gravity. More gravity means more influence from ...

Apocalypse (Greek: Ἀποκάλυψις -translit. APOKALYPSIS, literally: the lifting of the veil), is a term applied to the disclosure to certain privileged persons of something hidden from the mass of humankind. Today the term is often used to mean "end of the world", which may be a shortening of the phrase apokalupsis eschaton which literally means "revelation at the end of the world".

TNCBT, the "galactic alignment" explanation about the end of The 5th Sun is John Major Jenkins' theory, explained in detail in his book "Mayan Cosmogenesis 2012". An interesting work but my personal opinion is, Jenkins' approach largely depends on some symbolic and spiritual explanations, mostly borrowed from Terence McKenna. He neglected some certain clues from the Mayan (and much later Aztec) priestly tradition which clearly suggested a physical event, related to the "Earth Element", which meant a "geological/seismical" movement supposed to affect the Earth's mantle. The center image on the "Aztec Sun Stone" (the image on your clip) depicts it: "the earth opens its mouth and moves its tong...

True and I agree. I have heard Jenkins too, but I too think a more scientific and earthly explanation and cause would be at play, mundanely defined by the laws of nature and the cosmos, gravitation pulls etc. If anything does happen, and it would be the event of the century if it did, I think the "enlightening" many elude to, might just as well be about the immense social change and the massive upheavals of "life as we know it" such a galactic event could cause (and hopefully for the better, since they don't say "darkening".) Floods, tsunamis, earthquakes, maybe even pole shifts caused by the movement of the mantle etc, li...

Anyway! In a way out there "what if" scenario and just go with the flow here and pretend, what if f.ex. the quickening/evolution/technology/whatever sped us into the possible future noosphere of consciousness faster than we think and that it just so happened to coincide with or around this event too? Or the opposite? That mankind is flung back to a pre-industrial age with no oil etc, because all is destroyed and we get a second chance at doing things right next time and do a better job at being humans and a less destructive species, in the next cycle? A Utopia? Both are extreme scenarios and my imagination is running wild here, but just imagine the possibilities? But let's just wait and see....

Excellent comments, btw.

TNCBT I think what you're saying is we need to 'party like it's 1999' on the eve of 12/21/2012?

I would love to compare clips on the 22nd though!

Asbestos is going to become popular again, and there is going to be a fortune in solar energy. I'm sure I saw a story once about the how passage of the milky way, over some mountains from a certain vantage point in South America led to the prediction of the end of an empire, and the next cycle would make a wider impact. I know it's vague, but they seem to be pointing to the same thing, using a different means. Whatever you say you have to admit the pre Spanish South Americans, were remarkable astronomers. The clean air of the Andes gave them quite a view.
They always seem to be trying to find new ways to ruin Christmas. The winners of the 2016 Olympics are bound to be disappointed (The Engl...

Another perhaps more Mayan interpretation of the Mayan Calendar comes from a book by a cell biologist. See http://www.mayanmajix.com/lab_F1.html. The calendar is as much about consciousness, as cosmology. See the Clip I made earlier today. Its about Clipmarking becoming a stage in the evolution of consciousness as groups of clippers learn to collaborate. Could indeed this be a group interested in the evolution of consciousness? Perhaps we could learn to collaborate to accelerate our learning to be able to produce a higher level of intelligence?

In my very first comment, the link to the video is actually by the late Ian Xel Lungold, the guy you're talking about. There's a lot of basics explained in the video and he's pretty easy on the ears. It's a good start anyway. Maybe we already have the beginnings of the noosphere here already JICWyllie, since we seem to have thought the same thing! Lungold would be so proud. *LOL*
