willhelm says: Congratulations, leftists. Shell and Exxon are two of the worlds largest developers of alternative energy. Thanks to your policies, taxation, and reluctance to drill at home, we will lose this major source of discovery and innovation. Exxon is surely soon to follow. It is competition, you know. It costs money to research. Exxon will have little choice. So it was liberal policies and not a drop in oil prices like the clip cites? interesting damn us liberals. Poor exxon and shell, they must be barely getting by. Maybe a bailout is in order drop in oil pricesYes, ignorant people often assume that oil is a domestically controlled market, outside the realm of international and middle eastern influence. It is always the case that a drop in oil prices lessens the demand in alternative energy. It is been the bane of alternative energy research for decades, since Carter. The issue here is the fact that oil companies cannot win. They cannot moderate the constant up and down erratic swings of oil prices because their hands are tied and irrationally dependent on people and nations that hate western liberty. OPEC can practically flush the price of oil down the commode if they so choose. Domestic producers would no such... The innovation on a free market would. The innovation of a free market would. hey willhelm, are you saying that rightists have helped to spur alternative energy research by being pro business and free market oriented? Or are you saying business can't win because of international influence over this industry? Not following you clearly...other than your point that leftists are idiots. are you saying that rightists have helped to spur alternative energy research by being pro business and free market oriented?I say _capitalists_ do when the market is left to do its work. The invisible hand. They can be rightists or leftists. Or are you saying business can't win because of international influence over this industry?I am saying the oil companies are in a pickle of foreign dependence and domestic enemies of the industry. ...other than your point that leftists are idiots.I did not say that, but it does go without saying. The Kennedy's don't want wind farms in their vista and Feinstein does not want solar panels in her home c... The capital infusion that`s going on in the industry worldwide right now is going to raise production levels from today`s 85 million barrels a day to somewhere around 110 to 115 million barrels a day sometime in the next 20 years. I do not believe in peak oil. (John Hofmeister, Fmr. head of Sell Oil-8/2008) Could this have anything to do with losing interest in alternative fuels? They don't believe in peak oil. They do believe in increasing profit margins. Shumpeter's theory of market innovation will probably predict Shell will be replaced by an alternative fuel company that may not even exist yet, but it will fight to prevent these new innovations from taking over their piece of the pie for some time to come. My opposition to a nuclear power plant in my back yard has nothing to do with Yucca or storage of waste, although your statement is a little misleading. The amount of US waste (not all waste) since we began storing it 50 years ago might fit into a gymnamsium, but ramping up nuclear energy to replace oil would require a lot more than that times a lot more than 50 years. While we might be able to innovate a way around this issue, preventing a terror attack or a nuclear accident on site is more difficult. I don't want my children growing up in the shadow of one. They've already closed one river in France which was contaminated by a nearby plant. No thanks. Why not erect a building the size of an airplane hanger on the south pole? Make it two or three if you wish. There's room to grow forever. The problem with leftists is you generally look at unrealistic problems and find reasons why things won't work, unless the answer has some socialistic component. Rightists look at realistic answers to real problems and find reasons why thing will work. Something you all share is hyper angst. You all need therapy, not input to solving problems. I just said I do not find the storage of waste to be the problem, you have one idea, and innovation in production, recycling and storage will mitigate the storage problem. I may have angst but it aint about nuclear storage. "The evidence is clear that fossil fuel combustion is increasing the atmosphere’s carbon dioxide load. Prudence demands that we acknowledge the facts and act. Despite the daunting nature of the challenge, taking it on will create large opportunities in America to reduce energy costs, build new industries, revitalize rural economies, and carry out a constructive foreign policy free from the corrosive influence of petroleum politics." Republicans for Environmental Protection I am not a Republican. Maybe I should have just said I am not a leftist angst filled idiot! My point was that the some on the left and the right can agree that oil companies are part of the problem when putting profits above all else. You and I do not share the same bogeymen. Many on the left and many on the right can also agree that oil companies are not a problem and AGW is a farce. Some very close and dear people to me, who generally vote Dem, share that opinion. It's a matter of hugging the monster and embracing the facts. For me it's about being practical. I have no clue whether Florida will be underwater someday because ice may melt. But I do believe reducing emissions is a good thing for the earth and the people living here. I see the oil company good guy/bogeyman argument more as an argument for more of the same or innovation. Capitalism is the best system to promote innovation, so I support it, with govt protections against the pitfalls of corporate self interest. Shell and Exxon are good examples of companies providing a product in demand but having leadership which fails to consider the long term costs of short term profits; for example pummeling Carter for his now visionary insights. Profits trump... Profits trump national security because they have become multi national.Outside of everything else and irrespective of the oil industry, I agree with this across the board on what I see is creeping corporate totalitarianism. But on all the rest we can just agree that you are wrong and I am right. |
